Bury The Witch, a Detective Tony Marcella mystery
by Dana Donovan

This contains a spoiler or two, so if you're planning to read this novel, do not read on!

I really enjoyed the first few books in this series, but have been hovering at the 3 stars (Okay) level for the last few.I like paranormal fantasy, but like it to stay in this world and to be imaginable.I'm not so much a fan of interdimensional travel or of made up worlds that don't really seem to move the series objective along.I was willing to forgive a foray into another dimension a couple of books back, and was annoyed, but overall okay with the absence of Tony Marcella in the last adventure (among other things) and enjoyed the development of Ursula's character in that novel, as well as the backstory of Lilith and her mother, Gypsy.I mean, after all, the name of the series didn't change from the Detective Marcella mystery series, so short of Lilith becoming a detective, it was relatively obvious Tony would be back, in some form or another.

That said, I looked forward to this new book, feeling that now that flesh and blood Tony was back, things would be back to the interesting idea of solving mysteries with a little, or a lot, of paranormal help.

Sadly, like the infamous dream season on the original Dallas series, turns out Tony wasn't dead, just off in Eighth Sphere with Jerome. He believed he'd been gone 5 years, rather than the few weeks that had passed in this world.

So, Tony's back. But he's not alone. No, he brought Jerome, the driget, with him.Couldn't decide if the time they spent together in the Eighth Sphere made Tony look at him as a pet, a friend, or a son.Whatever, it didn't ring true.Nor did the explanation of suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.I didn't buy that he was so traumatized that he'd every willing leave his beloved job on the police force, let alone leave Lilith to return to the Eighth with Jerome. But Donovan evidently felt his fans would believe it, because Tony's struggle with the decision of whether to stay or leave is the centerpiece of the novel. Or, perhaps he just didn't know how he was going to manage the quintessential, which Ursula brought back with her from the Eighth Sphere two books back. Sending it back

And that's frustration on my part was too bad, because the real world mystery involved in this novel was a fun one.A perfect crime involving 20 million dollars worth of diamonds.I imagined some fun ways Lilith, Tony, and Ursula's magic could be used in this, but alas, there really wasn't a lot of interaction. There was Lilith's story and there was Tony's story and seldom did the two occupy the same space. For me, a major let down.

So, while I did enjoy parts of the novel, on the whole I was disappointed.Especially since the ending leaves the door open for more interaction between Spheres. So, I may have read the last of these, and I'd hate that as I was very fond of the characters prior to the rupture in the space/time continuum.
