Dear Mr. Henshaw [PDF]

This was a good story, but what really impressed me was the style. I always love when authors are creative in their style of narration, and having the entire story told through Leigh’s letters and diary entries gave the book a very distinct feel.It also resulted in a brilliant weaving of story, plot, and character that grew and matured with the main character. The spelling and the complexity of sentences stayed true to his age, and even the story was only centered on the problems of a young boy in the beginning. But the gradual development that the years bring about within the main character is a growth that is fascinating to watch, especially because it is a growth not only in age. Not only does Leigh come to an increasing awareness of his own feelings, abilities, and identity, but the reader watches a wonderful progression take place, where he moves from angry resentment at his parents’ separation to forgiveness and a restored friendship with his father.
